Is it permissible to play Qur'aanic recordings in public places etc.?
Qur'aanic recordings should not be played in public places, shops, buses, etc. as the etiquettes and respect of the Qur'aan demand us to show utmost respect to the recitation of the Qur'aan by listening attentively. It will be a sign of disrespect if people can hear the Qur'aan being recited but are not attentive as they are occupied with something else. It is indeed a great source of deprivation and very improper to engage in speech and other activities while the Qur'aan is being recited and such disrespect to the Qur'aan will surely deserve Allah Ta'aala's anger.
Allah Ta'aala says in the Quraan,
"And when the Qur'aan is recited, listen to it attentively and be silent."
The order of listening attentively to the Qur'aan and being silent in the above verse is general. Therefore, this order will be applicable to all conditions whether the situation is in regard to a khutbah or Salaah or while travelling in a car etc. It is mentioned in khulasatul Fatawa and other juristic works that it is not permissible for the Qur'aan to be recited (or played) in a loud manner where people are busy doing their chores or resting. The fuqaha (jurists) have also said that anyone who recites the Qur'aan in a loud voice in such surroundings shall be a sinner.
