Monosodium Glutamate, not good for the body or mind

You have probably heard of monosodium glutamate, or MSG, an additive used in processed foods. MSG is a flavor enhancer. It is extracted from seaweed and concentrated.
MSG has been added to processed foods since the l940's. Yet in the l950's, researchers discovered that it caused blindness, brain lesions and seizures in mice. So MSG began to be suspect.

Today, Monosodium Glutamate is in practically all packaged foods, fast foods, restaurant foods, snack foods, sauces, dressings, diet foods, even health foods.

But how bad is it?

A neurosurgeon, Dr. Russell Blaylock, has written a book on MSG entitled Excitotoxins, The Taste that Kills. Dr. Blaylock explains that MSG is an excitotoxin. It is sodium plus free form glutamate, an amino acid taken out of its protein context and concentrated. Concentrated free form glutamate is toxic. It causes brain cells to fire rapidly, become exhausted and die. MSG kills brain cells. Not good!

Excitotoxins can cause: memory loss, confusion, learning problems, Alzheimers, fertility problems, Parkinsons, and other neurolgical disorders, It worsens Multiple Sclerosis and autism symptoms.

Monosodium Glutamate affects the hypothalamus area of the brain, which controls hormones, sleep patterns, moods and emotions, and appetite. It can cause diarrhea, migraines, irregular heart beat, depression, bipolar disorder, blurred vision, chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, hyperactivity, chronic post nasal drip, poor memory, and neurological disorders!

Brains, Emotions and Children

MSG may especially affect children, whose brains are still growing.

Recently I heard about children being bullied by their peers, with extreme cruelty. I couldn't help but wonder if diet and MSG were part of the cause of this out of control emotional behavior. It seems that more children have emotional issues, anger, learning difficulties.

Our children need high quality, nutrient dense foods, but often they get fruit juices, sugary foods, msg laden snacks and fast food. I find this alarming. We need to feed our children well for them to develop a strong brain!

The food industry loves MSG. MSG will make anything taste good, even cheap, poor quality ingredients. And MSG is addictive. So the food industry is not about to give up MSG!

Food manufactureres give Monosodium glutamate many different names to hide it from you. Even foods labeled "no MSG" may contain MSG under another name.

Where is MSG?

These always contain MSG: glutamate, monosodium glutamate, monopotassium, yeast extract, glutamioc acid, calcium casinate, sodium casinate, hydrolyzed protein, gelatin, hydrolyzed corn gluten, texturized proteins, yeast nutrietn autolyzed yeast, natrium glutamate

MSG is often in these: carrageenan, bouillion, broth, stock, whey protien concentrate, whey potein isolate, soy sauce, soy sauce extract, fortified protien, soy protein isolate soy protien concentrate, seasonings, flavors, flavoring, natural flavors, citric acid, maltodextrin, natural chicken flavoring, ultra-pasteurized, barley malt, pectin, protease, protease enzymes, enzymed modified, malt flavorings, malt extract. anything labeled hydrolyzed, amino acids or protien may have MSG.

Packaged health foods may have MSG, even those labeled organic. These often use yeast extract, texturized proteins and soy concentrates. All may be MSG.

So how do you avoid MSG?

When you buy food packages, look for an ingredients list with five or less ingredents, and make sure you recognize these as food!
I buy from companies I trust, and I always read labels. Sometimes a company will change its formulation, or it may be bought out by a huge food manufaturer who uses lots of MSG.

When eating out, avoid sauces and dressings. Eat simple foods. Avoid fast foods and choose a high quality restaurant. Look for restaurants that use fresh ingredients and that support sustainable food.

Nearly, but not quite. There are many products which have very few ingrediants and none of the above.
If a person is serious about avoiding MSG they will find that they are not alone in this. Plenty of people all over the world are realizing the extensive danger of it and many food chains, e.g. Woolworths, do not use MSG in any or alot of their products.

You dead right about it being harmful, i've been reading up on it more.

Allahu Akbar!! I thought MSG was just ordinary stuff derived from plants! It is unbelievably harmful....
But so many potato chips contain MSG Crying or Very sad Anyhow, my health is way more important! Jazaakallah for sharing sister Amatur Rahman Smile
